Why choose older model wing-foil kits at a discount?

Simple: you get almost the same performance at half the price.

Most “new” foil tech is incremental. A carbon tail tweak. A few grams shaved. Maybe a different bolt pattern. If you're not chasing podiums or bleeding-edge specs, a discounted model from last year will ride just fine. Hydrofilters tend to get really hype about gear but at the end of the day modern gear from even 4 years ago is elite these days. We’re not in the early days of foil development and we vet our brands before we make a big purchase. You can bet if we stock something its because Johnathan or Jenifer spent time testing it before putting it online and on the wall.

We’ve found that in the last four years a lot of gear has reached a certain standard. That’s not to say there aren't new exciting developments but you are going to pay a premium for that. If you're on a budget the good news is older models are not going to hold you back. In fact a lot of our older models are fully elite with last year's innovations and priced to move.

Can I test or inspect older gear before buying?

Absolutely. If you’re local—or just in town for a few days—stop by the shop. Epic Boardsports is located just five minutes off A1A, right in the heart of Cocoa Beach. Whether you're driving up from Melbourne or swinging through Cape Canaveral after a morning surf, we’re an easy detour—and well worth it if you're about to drop hundreds on gear.

Want to test it on the water before you commit? That’s where our foil rentals and demos come in.

We run a full rental and demo program for wing-foil gear—including many of the same models we have on close-out. You can try a foil setup that’s just like the one we’re selling (or the exact one, if it's a demo). This is hands-on, no-pressure testing in real Florida conditions—east winds, side-shore setups, Cocoa Beach chop.

Here’s how it works:

  • Call ahead or stop in and ask what demo foils are available

  • We’ll rig the gear, help with setup, and get you on the water

  • If you buy that day, we’ll often apply part of the rental toward your purchase

For out-of-town buyers, we’ve got you too. We’ll send you clear, close-up photos of any close-out foil you’re eyeing. Want a quick video showing the trailing edge or fuselage bolts? Just ask. We want you to feel 100% confident in what you’re getting.

Bonus: Many of our close-out foils come straight from our lesson fleet. That means they’ve been maintained regularly, rigged by experienced staff, and broken in with care—not trashed or neglected like some online “deals.”

Are there risks to buying close-out hydrofoil gear?

Sure—but they’re manageable.

Check for:

  • Bolt corrosion or saltwater wear

  • Cracked wings or bent masts

  • Brand compatibility (some fuse/wing combos don’t mix)

You don’t have to stress about any of that when buying gear from us, we pre-inspect all gear and flag anything sketchy. If you’re newer to the sport, our wing-foil lessons help you test and learn before buying.

How to maintain an older wing-foil hydrofoil for long-term use

Close-out foils can last just as long as brand-new gear—if you take care of them. Florida’s salt air, humidity, and UV exposure will chew through neglected hardware fast. But with a simple post-session routine, your foil can stay clean, tight, and ride-ready for years.

We have to care for a lot of gear and there is a certain standard to hold. If you’re buying from a random person check to see how they cared for the foil before buying. Some things to

Here’s how to keep it dialed:

  • 1. Rinse thoroughly with freshwater after every session
This isn’t optional. Saltwater corrodes aluminum, locks up carbon interfaces, and eats bolts. Hose down every part—mast, fuse, wings, bolts, and board inserts. If you’ve been riding in Cocoa Beach shorebreak or back in Banana River’s muckier spots, rinse even harder.
  • 2. Disassemble your foil and let it dry
Leaving your foil rigged 24/7 is how you get frozen bolts and carbon fusion. Break it down—especially the fuselage and front wing—and let everything air-dry before packing it away. Use a towel if needed. Dry parts = no salt creep.
  • 3. Use anti-seize or tef-gel on your bolts
This is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Apply a small dab of anti-seize compound (like Permatex or Tef-Gel) to every bolt thread, especially those going into aluminum masts or carbon wings. It prevents galvanic corrosion and makes disassembly smooth.
  • 4. Check for play at the fuselage or tail weekly
Over time, connections can loosen. That subtle wiggle in your tail wing? It becomes drag and instability. Every few rides, check all connection points—mast base, fuse bolts, wings—and tighten as needed.
  • 5. Inspect for cracks, chips, and corrosion monthly
Run your hand along the foil’s edges. Look for hairline cracks in carbon or pitting on aluminum. A little corrosion on a bolt head is cosmetic, but pitting near stress zones? That’s a red flag. Replace early.
  • 6. Store out of the sun and heat
Don’t leave your foil in a hot car or baking on the porch. UV degrades resin and weakens carbon bonds. Store it in a cool, shaded spot—ideally bagged or covered.
  • 7. Keep a spare bolt kit in your bag
Old bolts snap. Threads strip. Having a spare set (M6 or M8 depending on brand) can save your session if something fails at the beach.

This routine might take 10 minutes—but it’ll extend your foil’s life by seasons. Treat your gear right, and your close-out score will ride like new long after the “2025 edition” hype fades.

Treat gear well  and even a 3-year-old foil can look like new.
