How to maintain an older wing-foil hydrofoil for long-term use

Close-out foils can last just as long as brand-new gear—if you take care of them. Florida’s salt air, humidity, and UV exposure will chew through neglected hardware fast. But with a simple post-session routine, your foil can stay clean, tight, and ride-ready for years.

We have to care for a lot of gear and there is a certain standard to hold. If you’re buying from a random person check to see how they cared for the foil before buying. Some things to 

Here’s how to keep it dialed:

• 1. Rinse thoroughly with freshwater after every session
  This isn’t optional. Saltwater corrodes aluminum, locks up carbon interfaces, and eats bolts. Hose down every part—mast, fuse, wings, bolts, and board inserts. If you’ve been riding in Cocoa Beach shorebreak or back in Banana River’s muckier spots, rinse even harder.
• 2. Disassemble your foil and let it dry
  Leaving your foil rigged 24/7 is how you get frozen bolts and carbon fusion. Break it down—especially the fuselage and front wing—and let everything air-dry before packing it away. Use a towel if needed. Dry parts = no salt creep.
• 3. Use anti-seize or tef-gel on your bolts

• 5. Inspect for cracks, chips, and corrosion monthly
  Run your hand along the foil’s edges. Look for hairline cracks in carbon or pitting on aluminum. A little corrosion on a bolt head is cosmetic, but pitting near stress zones? That’s a red flag. Replace early.
• 6. Store out of the sun and heat
  Don’t leave your foil in a hot car or baking on the porch. UV degrades resin and weakens carbon bonds. Store it in a cool, shaded spot—ideally bagged or covered.
• 7. Keep a spare bolt kit in your bag
