What's the difference between a paddleboard tour and a rental in Cocoa Beach?

Should you book a guided paddleboard tour or rent a SUP in Cocoa Beach? Compare what each option includes, how much time you get, who each experience is best for, and whether a guided tour or independent rental fits your day on the water.

On a paddleboard tour, a guide takes you out on the water and handles the route. With a rental, you get the board and the gear, and you decide where to paddle and for how long. We run both at Epic Boardsports, and the choice comes down to how much of the outing you'd rather carry yourself.

That's the same answer we give at the counter on N Orlando Ave, and it's usually followed by one question: what are you hoping to do with the time you have?

What do you get on a guided paddleboard tour with Epic?

Your guide is with you the whole way, so you're not working out the route on your own. You'll be out with one of us: Jennifer, Jonathan or our son Xander, who's been helping in the shop for years.

We have one of the very few permits to operate tours here in Cocoa Beach, so we're vetted to take people out commercially. The boards are stable and forgiving, which helps if this is your first time standing on one.

We start with a short briefing on land. We size your paddle and cover the basics of paddling efficiently. It's not a full lesson, just enough to make the time on the water easier. Then you spend at least an hour out there at a relaxed pace, looking for birds, manatees and dolphins, with time to talk. A tour is typically about a two hour commitment (75 to 90 minutes on the water).

Launch spots, wildlife and what to bring are all covered in our guide to what to expect on a Cocoa Beach paddleboard tour.

What do you get when you rent a paddleboard?

A rental is the board, a paddle and a flotation device, matched to your size and what you plan to do. A half day is $35 for four hours and a full day is $50, and we don't clock you by the hour. The full breakdown is in our guide to what a paddleboard rental costs in Cocoa Beach.

Most of what you'll see in our demo and rental room is rental gear you can book and take wherever you like, to the river or the ocean. We have inflatable, composite, flat water, race, surf and fishing boards, so there's something for every size and shape of paddler. You can browse Epic's paddleboard rentals and demo boards to see the range, and book a single day or several.

Before you leave the shop, we give you a short briefing and point you to the calmest water for the day. If you're curious about buying, a rental is a good way to try different boards first.

Are guided paddleboard tours worth it?

They are if you're new to the area and want someone else handling the route. A guide knows the local waterways, so you can spend the outing looking around instead of wondering where to go.

It's also the easier way to look for wildlife. We can't promise a sighting, but a guide knows where to look and you're free to look with them. Light wind and calm water help most, and our guide to your chances of seeing manatees and dolphins from a paddleboard covers what to watch for.

The trade-off is that you follow the guide's route and pace. If you'd rather wander, stop where you like or stay out for hours, a tour isn't the right fit. A rental is.

When is a rental the better choice?

A rental is the better choice when you want the freedom more than the guide. That's most often travelers who want a board for a day or a few days, paddlers who've been out before and feel good after a short briefing, and anyone trying boards because they're thinking about buying.

It's not the right call for everyone. If you've never paddled and the wind is up, or someone in your group is nervous around water, book the tour instead. A guide beats a self-guided rental on those days.

Is a paddleboard tour the same as a lesson?

No. A tour includes a short briefing, but it isn't a full lesson. If you want someone watching your technique and fixing it as you go, book one of Epic's stand up paddleboard lessons.

Not sure whether you need a lesson or a rental? Our guide on whether to book a lesson or rent a paddleboard walks through how we decide.
