Can you paddle board year-round in Cocoa Beach? Yes. Learn what to expect during summer and winter, how to dress for changing conditions, when mornings are best, and which weather conditions mean you should stay off the water.
Yes. There's no off-season for paddling in Cocoa Beach. Our leaves don't change, but the conditions for paddling hold up in every season. What changes is when you go and what you wear.
We've been paddling here as a family for 15 years, through the summer heat and the winter cold, so that's the advice we give people who ask.

What makes Cocoa Beach good for paddle boarding all year?
We're lucky to have two kinds of water close by: the ocean and the Banana River Lagoon. When the ocean side is windy or choppy, the lagoon side usually gives you somewhere calmer. Ramp Road Park is the launch we point people to most, because you can pretty much always find some shelter there, whichever way the wind is blowing.
So the month matters less than the wind and the time of day. The east coast sea breeze usually starts building around noon or 1 p.m. and often peaks by 3 or 4 in the afternoon, which is why mornings are calm in every season. Nick Reeser, a foiler who lives in Cocoa Beach, told us conditions here almost never repeat two days in a row, and that since he moved down in June he'd counted maybe ten days with nothing to do on the water, and even on those there was flat water to paddle. Our guide to the calmest places to paddle in Cocoa Beach covers which launch fits which conditions.
What should you expect paddle boarding in Cocoa Beach in summer?
In summer, the heat is the thing to plan for. You'll want to stay comfortable and cool out there, so go early, bring water and cover up with sunscreen, a hat and a lightweight sun layer. We like Patagonia's lightweight Capilene for this. It keeps the sun off and keeps you cooler in the hotter temps.
Summer also brings afternoon thunderstorms. The National Weather Service in Melbourne counts Florida's warm season as May through September, and along the east coast the lightning threat is most often a late afternoon and early evening problem, per the NWS lightning climatology for East Central Florida. Mornings are the safe window, and our guide to the best time of day to paddle board in Cocoa Beach explains why we like to be on the water by 8 a.m.
The storms aren't only a threat. "Some of the best sessions I've had are on the backside of a thunderstorm. It sucks the wind out and glasses everything off." That's Jennifer, and it only applies once the storm has fully passed and the thunder is long gone, never with lightning anywhere near. June through August is also the lightest-wind stretch of the year, so the beach side tends to run flatter, which is fine for a cruise but gives you less to ride.
What should you expect paddle boarding in Cocoa Beach in winter?
Winter asks you to think about the cold. We do get days in Florida when a bathing suit isn't enough, and wind can make it feel colder than what the thermostat said when you woke up. Winter is also our windy season. Cold fronts can bring punchy wind, often 25 to 30 knots or more, which our wing foilers love and paddlers plan around. The morning after a front passes is often glass.
You get something back for it. Winter mornings can stay glassy later, and the migratory birds are here, so there's plenty to watch even when a dolphin doesn't show up. Winter is also the better season to try the ocean side. North winds are more common, and they can clean up the south side of the jetty at Jetty Park. Our guide to paddling the ocean or the lagoon in Cocoa Beach covers when the beach side is worth trying. For a wider look at how the seasons compare across the state, see when to paddle board in Florida, summer and winter.
How do you stay comfortable when the weather changes?
Think layers. If you can layer over a bathing suit, you're ready to shed those layers once you start paddling and generating body heat. Conditions decide, mostly the temperature, and wind makes it feel colder.
You may not need a full wetsuit. If you're traveling, packing one doesn't hurt. If you're local or you're headed to the ocean more often, you'll want one, at least a 3/2 long-sleeve shorty. On the lagoon side, a bathing suit and a light layer is usually enough, and even workout tights work if you're cruising the river. The ocean side asks for more in the winter months, and we like to be warm and toasty out there. What to wear, piece by piece, is in our guide to what to wear for stand-up paddle boarding in Cocoa Beach.
When is a day too rough to paddle board in Cocoa Beach?
Some days are a no in any season. If there's thunder in the forecast, stay off the water. If a tropical system is coming, skip it. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and a date inside that window isn't a reason to cancel, but a storm in the forecast is. On a windy day with chop on the ocean side, a beginner is better off in the lagoon or picking another day. Even then, there are protected launches about five minutes from the shop, so call before you write the day off.
Check the forecast the night before, and call us if you're not sure. We'll tell you if it isn't worth going out. Our guide to the best tides and weather conditions for paddleboarding in Cocoa Beach shows how to read them.

Frequently Asked Questions
+ Is there a bad time of year to paddle board in Cocoa Beach?
No season is off-limits. What rules out a day is the weather: thunderstorms, a tropical system, or strong wind on the ocean side.
+ Do I need a wetsuit to paddle board in Cocoa Beach in winter?
Not a full one. Layers over a bathing suit cover many winter days, and you can shed them once you're moving. If you live here or paddle the ocean often, we'd recommend at least a 3/2 long-sleeve shorty.
+ Is it too hot to paddle board in Cocoa Beach in summer?
Not if you plan for it. Go in the morning, bring water and wear a lightweight sun layer. The afternoon storms are the bigger reason to be off the water early.
+ Can you paddle board during hurricane season?
A date inside hurricane season isn't a reason to stay home, but a tropical system in the forecast is. Check the forecast the night before, and call us if you're unsure.
